Arden – Dr. Frank E. McClelland, Jr., 98, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016.
Born January 29, 1916, he was the son of the late Frank E. McClelland, Sr. and Emma Carpenter McClelland.
Dr. McClelland was raised in Kenmore, a suburb of Buffalo, NY, where in the early years was active in the YMCA, Boy Scouts and the Presbyterian Church. He graduated from the NY State Veterinary College at Cornell University in 1940 and while thee became president of the local chapter of Theta XI Fraternity and was active in the Cornell Glee Club and Sage Chapel Choir. Upon graduation in 1940, he joined the staff of the McClelland Veterinary Hospital in Buffalo consisting of his father, Dr. Frank E. McClelland, Sr., and an older brother Dr. Robert McClelland.
Drafted in 1941, he married his lovely wife, Gerry, and then served five years as a captain in the US Army Veterinary Corps. In practice, he was a pioneer in the x-ray therapy of small animals and in cancer chemotherapy and, with his brother, won the American Veterinary Medical Practitioner of the Year award as a result of intensive survey of methods of immunizing dogs against Distemper. He was an active participant in Veterinary Medical Associations. He was a past president of the Western NY Society, Charter member and past president of the Buffalo Academy of Veterinary Medicine, charter member and past president of the Niagara Frontier Veterinary Society, charter member of the NY State Association of Professions and past president of the NY State Veterinary Medical Society. He was then award the NY State distinguished life service award for over 35 years of exemplary service. Dr. Frank McClelland, Jr. was also active in community affairs having served 15 years on the board and then chairman of the Delaware Family YMCA. He was active in the Sandy Beach Yacht Club, the Buffalo Rotary Club, Erie Lodge F&AM and the SPBSQSA.
Survivors include sons, Jeffrey F. McClelland and Mark E. McClelland and one daughter, Marcia Hubbard.
