Obituary for Albert Plemmons

Brevard - Albert E. Plemmons, 88, passed away at his home on Sunrise Valley Ranch, on February 1, 2022.
“Al” Plemmons was born August 4, 1933 in Madison County to the late Tennie Mathon Buckner Plemmons and Erastus Herman Plemmons. He was preceded in death by his brother Don and his sister Wanda Justice.
After graduating from Spring Creek High, he earned an associate degree from Blanton’s Business College in Asheville, N.C. He then married the love of his life, Betty, on November 25, 1955, and they were married for 66 years.
Al dedicated his professional career to Lowe’s Companies from 1955-1975. When Al started with the company, there were fewer than twenty stores. As a regional vice president, he helped lay the foundation for what today is the second largest home improvement center in the country. He and Betty moved to several cities and states during his Lowe's career, the last location being Wilkesboro, NC. During his early Lowe's career, he was also the pianist for The Joyfulaires Quartet, making regular appearances on local radio and television. At the age of 42, he retired from Lowe’s and set his sights on becoming a full-time farmer in Brevard, N.C. Cattle became his “associates” while pastures became his new “territory”. Being a farmer was not enough, as he wanted to give back to his community and state. In 1983, Al and Betty were recognized as the Conservation Farm Family of the Year for outstanding accomplishments in the conservation of soil, water, and related resources. In 1987, he directed The Twelfth Star, a play celebrating the bicentennial of the United States constitution, which debuted at Brevard Music Center to a sold-out audience. From 1987-1994, he was a Transylvania County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor. In 1990, Al ran for NC State Senate on a platform to improve the lives of residents of Western North Carolina… “A Mountain Man for Mountain People.” He was a former chairman of the Western North Carolina Development Association and in 2000, he received the JD Cooley Award for outstanding service. In 2005, he was recognized for 10 years of service as President of Transylvania County Farm Bureau. In 2007, he was inducted into the Western North Carolina Agricultural Hall of Fame.
Al was a member of First Baptist Church of Brevard. He had a razor-sharp mind, as he could remember dates, names and places without delay. He was always finding ways to help others through his generous giving. He supported many local churches and organizations. He loved to worship God through his gift of playing the piano. He was asked to play at many events, throughout his lifetime. He also loved to capture memories through videography and did this generously for many of his friends and family.

Al is survived by his beloved wife Betty Arrington Plemmons, his son Scott Plemmons and wife Sandra, his daughter Kimberly Williams and husband Hooper, his brother Reid Plemmons and wife Anna Jean; six grandchildren, Matthew, Kyle, Meaghan, Allie, Olin and Lei and one great grandchild, William.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 6 at First Baptist Church, Brevard N.C. with Reverend Jeff Maynard and Dr. Randy Barton officiating. A reception will follow in the church’s fellowship hall. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 7, 2022, at Garrett-Hillcrest Cemetery, Waynesville N.C.
