Alma H. McCracken, a loving and devoted wife, beloved mother, and caring friend, was called to her heavenly home on Saturday, October 24, 2020.
Alma was born in 1938 to the late Carrie and Charles Heath of Brevard, NC. The many family and friends surviving to cherish Alma’s memory include her husband of 42 years, James R. McCracken; loving and devoted children, David Strickland, Shirley Strickland, Wilma Strickland, Frank Jackson, and step-daughter Alice Fanning. Alma will be greatly missed by her 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, as well as her extended family and community of friends she made over the past eighty-two years.
Alma devoted her life to the care and service of others working in the healthcare industry for most of her life. A native of Brevard, NC, Alma graduated Brevard High School and was an active member of the community for the remainder of her life. Alma shared her love of God and family with all she met and was a devoted and loyal friend, always placing consideration for others above her own. As her children, we all recall a simple visit to the grocery store lasting several hours as she seemed to know and greet everyone we came across. There were always cousins, relatives, old friends, or new acquaintances to meet on every outing, and we never tired of hearing others say what we already cherished, how much they loved her, and how proud we must be to have such a wonderful and caring Mother. Alma had a love for animals as well as we always had a family dog growing up from our first four-legged friend ‘tiny’ to her final two loyal companions ‘Bunny’ and ‘Brownie.’ In the fashion which she always ended her conversations with her children, We love you too, with our entire hearts and look forward to seeing you welcoming us home once again.
Alma was preceded and welcomed home by her parents Carrie and Charles, her two brothers Edward and Charles (Junior), and sisters Frances Bracken and Dorothy Passmore.
Church services for Alma will be held at Carr’s Hill Baptist Church in Brevard at 2 pm on Thursday, October 29th, with Pastor Shane Hardesty officiating. Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory in Pisgah Forest will be the final resting place for Alma after the private family burial service.
The family cannot convey the fullness of their hearts or the gratitude for the kind words and sentiments of family and friends that remind us that Alma will not be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation can be made to Carr’s Hill Baptist Church.
