Obituary for Billie Sue Lawing (West)

Billie Sue West Lawing, of Brevard, died Sunday, December 16, 2018 after a brief period of declining health. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and friend who will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
She was born September 5, 1935, in Griffin, Georgia to the late John and Willie Ruth West Jones.
She graduated from Griffin High School in 1953 and Georgia State College for Women in 1957. In the summer of 1954 she worked as a camp counselor at Camp Gay Valley (now Gwynn Valley) in Transylvania County. There she met her future husband Luther (Bud) Lawing, of Charlotte, a fellow counselor. They were married August 24, 1957 in Griffin.
Mr. Lawing became an ordained Methodist minister, and after several years of “riding the circuit” with the Methodist Church, they returned to Brevard with their young family in 1965 when Mr. Lawing joined the faculty of Brevard College. Mrs. Lawing worked as a librarian, briefly for Brevard College, then for Transylvania County Schools for 23 years. In retirement she volunteered at Transylvania Regional Hospital.
She enjoyed gardening, and was a former member of the Transylvania Garden Club. She also enjoyed the natural beauty of Transylvania County, especially the birds, wildflowers, and waterfalls. The quintessential minister’s wife, she greatly enjoyed socializing with friends, family and acquaintances. She also loved to read.
She is survived by a stepbrother, Scott Jones and wife Nancy, of Marietta, GA, and their daughters Christen (husband Gary and daughter Gretchen)Pierce and Abbey Jones; children Erin Lawing (Asheville), Scott Lawing and wife Nancy (Brevard), Kim Lawing (Brevard), and Susan Lawing Barnes and husband Steve (Asheville); and grandchildren Rachel Lawing (Jersey City, NJ) and Alex Lawing (Charlotte).
Words cannot express the gratitude the Lawing family feels for the caregivers who cared for Billie at the end of her life. We could not hope to have had a more caring, compassionate, dedicated, and professional group of people serving her, and you have become like family to us.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, 325 North Broad Street, Brevard NC 28712.
Services will be held at First United Methodist Church in Brevard on Sunday, December 23, at 2:00 p.m., with a reception to follow at the church.
