Carl Daniel Roess, Jr., age 90, passed away on February 6, 2022. The son of Carl D and Esther Sawdey Roess, he was born June 6, 1931, on his father’s birthday, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He grew up in Middletown, Ohio, attending elementary school in Middletown and high school at Onarga Military Academy in Onarga, Illinois and Middletown High School.
After high school, his first job was at Armco Steel in Middletown, Ohio. He made a trip to Florida and lived there for a time, working at Arvida Nursery in Homestead, Florida and at the lab at Florida Portland Cement near the Everglades. While living and working in Florida, he met people from Transylvania County and came here for a visit. He said once he saw the mountains of Western North Carolina he thought Ohio was a good place to be from. After a time, he came back to Brevard and ran a business on Caldwell Street – United Radio and TV, selling and servicing TVs and appliances and doing refrigeration work. Later, he and a friend started a company, Appalachian Builders, that serviced swimming pools and installed awnings. Dan was a hard worker and took pride in the fact that he never applied for or received an unemployment check. In the early 60’s, he worked for RCA at the Rosman Tracking Station for several years and then took a job with Davis Mechanical in Greenville, South Carolina where he traveled throughout the Southeast doing Commercial Mechanical Work. In 1966 he came back to Brevard and started his own business in HVAC – Roess Mechanical, Inc which his sons operate today. Dan had unlimited North Carolina License for Heating and Air Conditioning and Plumbing and Refrigeration. He was a member of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society.
His interests included gardening and beekeeping but more especially the Second World War in general and aviation and the restoration of the Second World War planes, always finding another book or video to learn from.
