Obituary for Carroll Stokes Merrill

Carrol “Papaw” Stokes Merrill went home to be with The Lord at 9:20pm on April 23rd, 2020 surrounded by family at his residence. He was 89 years old. He can hear clearly now and is worshipping our Father in Heaven. Hallelujah! He was born in Little River, NC on June 4, 1930 to the late Gilliard and Sue Merrill. He was also proceeded in death by two infant brothers, JB and Gilliard Jr., brothers, Emerson, Theodore, Glen, Ansel and Connell, and sister, Brenda G. Merrill.

Carrol married Barbara Jean Chappell (survivor) on August 15, 1979 and together they enjoyed their farm; raising cattle and bailing hay for more than 40 years. He worked for Citizens Telephone Company for 50 years where he moved up in rank from a lineman at 18 years old to superintendent years before he retired. He made friends everywhere he went. He was a loving and kind man from a generation when a handshake and his word was a done deal. A faithful member of Enon Baptist Church, Carrol loved The Lord and loved his family well. His best buddy and true friend, Dennis Owen, was like a brother to him. They spent many a day together and “never had a harsh word between them”.

Carrol was the father of the late Gary Carrol Merrill of Gig Harbor, WA and survivor Doris Merrill Silvernell (husband, Edgar Silvernell, Jr.) of Franklin, NC. Other survivors include his loving granddaughters, Maria Forester Tritt (husband, Douglas and children, Emma & Clay) of Edenton, NC; Emily Forester Houston (children, Addyson & Mason) of Brevard and Hannah Forester Leonard (husband, Ronald and children, Dylan & Jillian) of New Bern, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.

Due to COVID19 restrictions, a private graveside service will be held. A memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Enon Baptist Church to further the ministry of the Gospel. 4531 Old Hendersonville Hwy, Pisgah Forest, NC 28768.
