Cecil Sanders, age 89 of Sapphire, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 25, 2020.

He was the son of the late Isaiah and Ola Norton Sanders. He was precededed in death by his wife of 62 years, Hilda Sanders, one daughter, Irma Sanders Shelton, one sister, Evon Taylor and three brothers, Ray, Robert, and Lane Sanders.

Cecil had a 22 year career in the US Army, serving two tours in Vietnam. While stationed in Salzburg, Austria he met and married Hilda. After traveling through various posts in Europe and the US they decided to return to Transvlvania County to retire in 1975, where they lived out their lives. Cecil was a bit of a practical joker and loved to "pull people's legs" at times. Above all, he was a very caring and generous person. He will be missed by many.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandy Sanders, two nephews, Rex Taylor, Terry Sanders, three nieces, Nanny Sue Scroggs, Brenda Buckner and Robby Price, one son in law, Larry Shelton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Transylvania Human Society to help support Cecil's love for dogs.

Due to Covid 19, a memorial will be held at a later date.

I will always remember Uncle Cecil for his sneaky smile and his smiling eyes. He would always have a leading question which would end up in a joke, and the joke was on you. He was kind and generous and a wonderful cook!! Any time you visited, he wanted to feed you. My favorite was the fudge candy he would make.
I was lucky enough to be the same age as his girls and one of my best summers was spent at their house. His great personality and generosity was passed down to Sandy. She was a super care-giver, and companion to her Dad.
Everyone will miss him terribly, but no one will ever forget him. He left us with happy memories and funny stories.
A special time at the Sanders family home place at Toxaway was when all the boys and Aunt Peg came home to visit Buddy and Grandmother. Now they are all together again!!

I'm so sorry to hear this. Cecil was a good man, dad thought a lot of him. He always reminded me of grandaddy. May he rest in peace.
