Obituary for Charles Joseph Bryson, Sr.

Charles Bryson Sr. of Brevard passed away Saturday, May 15th, 2021. He was 72. Charles was the son of Carl Bryson and Edna McCrary Bryson of Brevard.

Charles grew up in Brevard, attending Brevard High School and then Brevard College where he met JoAnn Pace. Charles and JoAnn were married June 27th, 1970 at Enon Baptist Church in Pisgah Forest. Charles and JoAnn both went on to attend the University of Tennessee where Charles earned a degree in Agriculture Science. Upon graduating, Charles began his career with the US Department of Agriculture through which he served as the Transylvania County Director of the Agriculture Stabilization & Conservation Service (ASCS) / Farm Service Agency (FSA) from the mid-1970’s until his early retirement in 1991 following a brain injury.

From the time he was a boy, Charles worked tirelessly on his family’s Poplar Hollow Farms. As a teenager he was very active in FFA locally and regionally where he won awards for his show cattle and corn production. Later, he shared his knowledge with his children who continued the tradition of showing award-winning Angus cattle. Through the years Charles continually worked to improve the farm’s cattle herd and corn production while also being mindful of sustainably caring for the land and the French Broad River, which flows through the farm. In 1997 Charles and Poplar Hollow Farms were awarded the National Environmental Stewardship Award by the American Angus Association for ongoing environmental stewardship. The following year, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association recognized Charles’ conservation achievements with its Environmental Stewardship Award.

Charles was a life-long member of First Baptist Church, Brevard, where through the years he had served as Sunday School teacher and Deacon. He was a member of the Transylvania County Cattlemen’s Association and Farm Bureau Federation where he had served in various leadership roles over the years as well. Charles also served on the regional Soil and Water Conservation District’s Board of Directors.

Survivors include his son, Joe Bryson and his wife Marisa Merrill Bryson of Brevard; his daughter Laura Bryson Morgan and her husband Justin Morgan of Clifton Park, NY; four grandchildren, Hayes Bryson, Ella Morgan, Miles Bryson, and Cade Morgan; a brother-in-law, Ron Pace of McCaysville, GA; two nephews, numerous cousins and many special friends. Charles was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Edna, his sister Merita who passed away at a young age, and his wife JoAnn.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 20th, 2021 at First Baptist Church, Brevard. The family will receive friends in the church parlor prior to the service, from 1:15 to 1:45.
