Obituary for Coach Charlie Owenby
Charles H. “COACH” Owenby passed away peacefully at his home in Brevard, NC at 8:10am on December 12th, 2019 at the age of 78 years old.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Edwards Owenby, of 46 years. They were married at Brevard Wesleyan Church in Brevard, NC on April 20th, 1974. He is also survived by two sons, Charles Chadwicke Owenby (Chad) and Christopher Charles Owenby (Chuck) of 43 years.
Charles is lovingly remembered by his mother, Willadean Mashburn of Clyde, NC; His two Daughters-in-Law, Nicole Sanders Owenby and April Harris
Owenby of Brevard ; His two Grand-Daughters who brought him immense joy, Cadence Marlee Owenby and Collins Pyper Owenby of Brevard; His Sister-in-Law Pecolia Edwards and Brother-in-Law Gerald Edwards and wife Vickie of Brevard; His Brother-in-Law Dennis Edwards and wife Maybelle of Etowah, NC; and His Honorary Brother Jerry Day and Wife Diane of Sylva, NC.
Charles is also remembered by several half-brothers and sisters as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles was born in Nantahala, NC on July 3rd, 1941. He graduated from Nantahala High School in 1959 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Western Carolina University in 1967. He also earned his master’s degree in Education Administration from Western Carolina University in 1982. He worked as a Teacher, Coach and Administrator in Transylvania County Schools for 31 years.
Charles enjoyed playing and coaching basketball, hunting, fishing, lifting weights, and he was a very active member of Brevard Wesleyan Church where he was a member of the Local Board of Trustees, taught Sunday School for many years, and he was very active in many of the holiday productions as well as the live nativity scene. Charles’ greatest joy was to spend every minute he had with his two granddaughters, Marlee and Pyper. They were the joy of his life. Marlee and Pyper put the twinkle in POPS eyes. He loved to watch them in all their sports and the many programs they would have at school and church. He was so proud of those two girls and he bragged of them often. He would have and show many pictures of them to all his friends and family! Charles’ greatest accomplishment was his marriage to the love of his life, Carolyn, for 46 years and the family that he produced from that beautiful union. He was the solid Christian leader of the family and his greatest joy was his family and their many successes over the years.
The visitation will be held at Brevard Wesleyan Church, 583 N. Broad Street, Brevard, NC 28712 on Saturday, December 21st, 2019 from 12pm-2pm with the Memorial Service to follow from 2pm-3pm.
