Obituary for Charley Leon Jones

Charley Leon Jones, 85, of Lake Toxaway went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 26, 2022. He will be sorely missed by his large family and community.
Charley was born and raised in Lake Toxaway and spent his life in the community he loved so dearly. He was born to the late Benjamin and Mary Jones, as the fourth of nine children. A proud graduate of Rosman High School, he then worked many years at Olin Mathison (Ecusta) and then went into business for himself as a building contractor.
Charley was a big part of a big clan here in his beloved Blue Ridge Mountains. He worked hard his whole life, building homes that will stand for many years to come and helping out his community along the way. He taught his five children the values of hard work, community involvement, and stubborn independence. He was often a light in the darkness for others, helping those who had fallen on hard times to have whatever they might need, from a place to live and food on the table to a wheelchair ramp or a safe ride home. He loved Bluegrass music, especially played live at the local community center, a revival, or one of the many open air singings he loved to attend. Through all the years, he was bolstered by the steadfast support of his wife, Doris Shelton Jones, and the legacy of his family, which he took great pride in being a part of.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Mary Jones; sisters Patricia Ann Jones and Gladys Jean Jones; brothers Bert Jones and Brodus Jones; and grandsons Jesse Lee Jones and Justin Cornett.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris Shelton Jones; children Randy Jones and wife Lonnie, Roy Jones, Karen Jones, Kathy Jones Smith and husband Richard, Kendra Jones Allen and husband John-Murray; grandchildren Ginger Jones Lance and husband Ricky, Cryshtal Jones Avera and husband Randy, Jericho Jones, Jon Cornett and wife Tiffany, Josh Cornett, Timothy McNeely and wife Keisha, Charity McNeely, and Miles Allen; sisters Berdell Philips and Martha Burrell; and brothers Stanley Jones and Brandon Jones. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2pm, Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Lake Toxaway Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.
