Obituary for Daniel Lee Beckett

Mills River - Daniel Lee Beckett, beloved husband, father, brother and friend, passed away at the age of 75 in Hendersonville, North Carolina on July 27th 2022. Dan had resided in the home that he built himself since 1978 in Mills River.

Dan was born on August 29th 1946 in San Marcos, Texas. He was born to Charles Lee Beckett and Doris Mildred Cornell Bowman. Throughout his early life he lived in many different areas in the country including Texas, West Virginia, New York, Arizona, and finally North Carolina, often working with his father building homes. When he turned 18, Dan enlisted in the United States Navy, spending 4 years honorably serving his country.

In 1978, Dan met his wife-to-be Anne Hembree. They married in December 1981 and he loved her deeply his entire life. Dan was known to have said that the only mistake his wife ever made was marrying him and was overjoyed to have her in his life. Dan regularly expressed how he felt about his wife to those who knew him in church and anywhere people would listen.

Dan was a stock broker by trade, and dealt in the market his whole life even after retirement. After officially retiring from taking clients, he kept a number of loyal clients and helped them without charge with their finances through the end of their lives. While Dan was always hard working, his main motivation for doing so was never for personal financial gain, but rather to provide for others and to treat others as he would like his family to be treated.

Dan was industrious and those around him could never doubt his work ethic. Often noted for his phrase “Saturdays are for working”, Dan could be found hard at work even on weekends making sure his family was provided for. He loved working with wood and did so all his life. He loved the mountains of North Carolina, fishing, his church, his home, the trees, the seasons, and most of all his family.

Dan was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints his entire life and a current member of the Brevard Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A painting of Jesus Christ hangs in the entrance to his home and he would never consider replacing it or changing its location in the home. Dan always made a conscious endeavor to be more like Christ in his life and encouraged others to do so as well.

Dan was known for his wit and dry sense of humor, which he passed on to his sons and other members of his family. While sometimes known for his stern countenance, he did love to laugh — especially when around those he loved. More than anything, he loved seeing his loved ones laugh and smile and his happiest moments were when he was surrounded by family on jovial occasions.

Dan is survived by his dear wife Anne, his sons and their wives, Adam and Catherine Beckett, Mason and Liza Beckett, Heath Beckett and Susan Zhang, and Derek and Ali Beckett; his grandchildren, Levi, Wade, Emily and Ellie; his sisters and brother, Marlene Lee, Rayna Dahle (Jim) and Tom Beckett (Kathy); his loyal dog Gabby, and relatives and friends too numerous to name.

Dan’s funeral was on July 30th, 2022 at The Brevard Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and celebrated Dan’s life and legacy. He was interred at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory in Pisgah Forest in the veteran’s section. Scott Cope officiated at the funeral, and Dan was carried to his resting place by his pallbearers Adam Beckett, Mason Beckett, Heath Beckett, Derek Beckett, Jim Dahle and Elliot Hardy.
