Print
Daphne Davis quietly passed away on October 16, 2018 at The Oaks, Brevard NC after a lingering illness. She had recently lived at The Inn at College Walk, Brevard. Born Ethel Daphne Leigh in Perth, Western Australia on February 13, 1924, she lived in England from 1928 to 1946 when she came to the United States. She was preceded in her death by her parents, Philip Charles James Leigh (1894-1944) and Ethel Florence (Snowden) Leigh (1896-1948), her brother Kenneth Snowden Leigh (1926-2005), her sister Jessie Margaret (Leigh) Fox (1927-2015) and her husband Carlton Duane Davis (1924-2011) of West Virginia. Daphne is survived by her sister, Edna Housecroft of Hadleigh, Suffolk, England and sister-in-law, Jill Leigh of Dorchester, Dorset, England.

She was the mother of Philip Laurence Davis, resident of Brevard, NC, who is married to Nancy Jane (Redifer) Davis. Daphne was the proud Grandmother of Shawn Redifer Davis of Portland, OR, married to Elizabeth (Daly) Davis, and Michelle Davis Klopfer of Blacksburg, VA, married to Scott Donald Klopfer. She was also the proud Great-Grandmother to 4 children: Madeline Davis Klopfer, Ryan Scott Klopfer, Ronan Daly Davis and Natalie Claire Davis.

Daphne spent her first years in Australia where her parents had started a farm after years of service in the British Army in Afghanistan and India during and after WWI. After a failure of their farm near Dwelling-Up, Western Australia, the family returned to their original home near Southampton, Hampshire, England in 1926. Daphne lived in England through WWII where she met her future husband, Carlton Davis, a GI stationed in Southampton, Hampshire prior to the D-Day invasion on Nazi-held Europe. In 1946 she emigrated to the U.S. as a war-bride to be married in Oakland, MD and to reside in Salem, West Virginia.

Daphne and Carlton were married until 1978 at which time she moved to Greenwood, IN, where she served as executive secretary to the President of the Central Indiana Council on Aging (CICOA) in Indianapolis until her retirement in 1996. She was a member of the Indianapolis Council of Women for a number of years, even after her retirement. In 2016 she moved to The Inn at College Walk, Brevard where she lived until the onset of her recent illness.
