Obituary for David Eugene Whitmire

David Eugene Whitmire, age 69, joined his mother, father and siblings in Heaven on Sunday, May 26, 2019.
David is survived by his sister Joyce McCall and husband James “Junior” McCall of Pisgah Forest, and many nieces and nephews.
He was part of a big family of the late Coy and Bertie Whitmire, and youngest of thirteen children and one adopted son, Samuel Vaughn. David was preceded in death by eight brothers, Ralph, Henry, Gordon, Marion, Paul, Tom, Charles, and J.C. “Bub” Whitmire, along with four sisters, Ethel Banks, Mae Franks, Elizabeth “Lib” Whitmire, and Dorothy “Tinker” Owen.
Like his siblings before him, David was born in Rosman on July 20, 1949 and was thought to have died during childbirth before he was revived by his late grandmother, Emma Love. Unfortunately, David’s brain had been without oxygen for too long, leaving David mentally retarded. He lived at home in Rosman with his mother and siblings until his mother’s death in 1966. He continued to live at home under the care of his sister Tinker and her husband Phillip E. Owen and their sons Ricky and Mike for several more years until his needs became too great to manage by his sister Tinker who was debilitated by diabetes. At that point, David was taken to Broughton Hospital in Morganton where he spent a brief time before his permanent move to the J. Iverson Riddle Development Center in 1988.
David made many trips back to his home through the years for holidays and birthdays until his balance became too dangerous and he was placed in a wheelchair. David was loved by all his nurses, health care providers, doctors, social workers and staff employees who engaged with him. Our family will be forever grateful and thankful for the compassion, care, understanding, and treatment that David received during his long stay at the J. Iverson Riddle Development Center.
A special thanks to David’s case worker, Nikki Stewart who said that David had one of his best days at the center earlier on Sunday before his life abruptly ended later that day.
A private family service will be held on David’s birthday, July 20, 2019.
David loved the other patients at the South Cedar-Oak Wing of the facility so the family asks that in lieu of flowers any donations may be made in the memory of David Eugene Whitmire to benefit other disabled patients at the facility in c/o: J. Iverson Riddle Development Center, 300 Enola Rd., Morganton, NC 28655 Attn: Alicia Wilson
