Obituary for Derrell Willis Smith
Derrell Willis Smith, 82, of Pisgah Forest passed away peacefully at his home on October 13, 2021.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Judson “Hoot” Smith and Bessie Wood Smith, five siblings, and beloved granddaughter and great granddaughter.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Geraldine P. Smith, their five children and spouses, Donna James (Grant), Kevin Smith (Sheree), Phillip Smith (Christine), Sheila Dale (Greg), and Willie Smith (Neaka).
The Lord Blessed him with a multitude of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. He had a heart full of love, pride, and joy for his family. Having his family around him brought him so much peace and happiness.
If you were his friend, you were a friend for life.
As a lifelong avid hunter, he taught his sons, grandsons, and many others to enjoy all aspects of hunting and being in God’s amazing outdoors. His prized hunting plot-hound was named “Crusher”. He loved tilling the soil, growing gardens, working on his farm, and raising livestock. He owned and trained powerful racking and quarter horses.
In 1999 he retired from Ecusta.
A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, in the Moody-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Wood Cemetery in Balsam Grove.
