Obituary for Dian Smith Brewton

Dian Brewton (nee Dian Smith) died February 2, 2022, after a three-year battle with cancer.

A native of Valdosta, Georgia, Mrs. Brewton was the daughter of Daniel U. Smith, a pharmacist, and Ada Bell “Webbie” Smith, a nurse. She graduated as the salutatorian of her class at Valdosta High School and earned her bachelor’s degree from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia. It was in Atlanta that she met Samuel Brewton. They married February 20, 1960. In 1963 they moved to Brevard, North Carolina, and immersed themselves in the community through their careers, friendships, and many civic activities.

A consummate teacher, Mrs. Brewton worked more than 30 years with the Transylvania County School System as a teacher, a special curriculum coordinator, and an administrator. She touched hundreds of students’ lives and remained in many of those lives as a devoted friend long after they graduated.

Mrs. Brewton began her career teaching social studies at the Brevard High School. She later was instrumental in establishing the first computer labs in the local schools and developing a curriculum to introduce students to basic programming and other computer skills. In her last decade with the schools, she worked tirelessly as the public relations director to advance the strength of public education and the many accomplishments of the local schools.

Even after her retirement, Mrs. Brewton continued to support the education and growth of local students through the school’s Educational Foundation, the Boys and Girls Club, and her activities with many civic organizations.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Mrs. Brewton, loved spending time with friends and family. She was a devoted Agnes Scott alumna and competitive bridge player. She traveled extensively to Italy, France, and the UK, and always had amusing, wonderful tales to tell about her adventures. She will best be remembered by her kindness, intelligence, lively conversation, and compassion for everyone she met. She will be deeply missed by all of us.

Mrs. Brewton is survived by her husband of 62 years, Sam; her daughter, Susan (Erika); her son, Nathan (Kara), and her grandson, Harrison. She was preceded in death by her son, Samuel A. Brewton III “Buddy”.

A memorial service will be held at St. Philips Episcopal Church in Brevard, NC, on March 19, 2022, at 2 p.m.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Elizabeth House hospice in Flat Rock, NC, for their wonderful care and compassion in her final days.

To honor her life, the family requests that donations in her name be directed to the Transylvania County Schools Educational Foundation, St. Phillips Episcopal Church, or the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
