Sapphire - Donald Wade Hunter, age 84, departed this life on April 21, 2022 at Mission Hospital surrounded by loved ones.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Wade Hunter and Ola Wallin Hunter; his sister, Nancy Hunter Wilde; his brother, Franklin “Butch” Hunter; and his great-grandson, Emmett Hunter-Eden Burchill.
Don was born on December 23, 1937 in Marshall, North Carolina. He attended Gardner-Webb University and served in the Army as a Corporal Specialist. In his adult life, he worked as a builder and was adored by those he crafted for. He loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing and shared these experiences with all those he loved. He also tended a noteworthy garden that provided vegetables for his family. Don was a life-long learner with a passion for history. He collected antiques of all varieties and would share the stories of his pieces with anyone who would listen. Don was the hardest worker one could ever meet and served as a mentor for many young men and women. He was a loving husband, father, Papaw, and Great-Papaw.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Pearl Hunter, sister, Frankie Hunter Herdy, children, Wade Lewis Hunter, Maria Hunter Buehler, Debbie Reneau, and Bill Craigo, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In honor of Don, please stand up straight, suck in your gut, and put your chest out.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to one of two charities that were dear to Don, the Wounded Warrior Project or Doctors without Borders.
Funeral services will be held 2pm, Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at Moody Connolly Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in Union Cemetery on Whitewater road in Sapphire, North Carolina.
