Obituary for Dorothy Marie Cassell-Reed (Thomas)

DOROTHY CASSELL-REED, born July 20, 1933, entered her heavenly home on December 26, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Leonard H. and Slate M. Thomas of Lake Toxaway. Dot was a wonderful mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was a charter member of North Toxaway Baptist Church and openly shared her Christian faith with those around her.

She was a graduate of Rosman High School and Mission Memorial School of Nursing. In 1954, she married her high school sweetheart, Donalee N. Cassell, and began a wonderful journey as a military wife. As she followed her husband to Texas, Florida, Bermuda Island, Colorado, and finally, Alaska, she continued to work in her chosen field of nursing. After her husband’s death in 1976, she remained in Anchorage, Alaska, and continued working at Providence Hospital until her retirement in 2000. Although she was thousands of miles away from her childhood home, she regularly returned home for visits with her family and friends.

In 1992, Dorothy married Charlie Reed in Alaska. They enjoyed camping, traveling, and spending time with grandchildren. It was always Dot’s dream to return home to Lake Toxaway, which she did in 2001 after her retirement and the death of her husband, Charlie, in 2000. She enjoyed visiting and spreading joy and love to the elderly and “shut-ins” in the community.

Her children and grandchildren were the joys of her life. They were blessed to spend growing-up years camping and fishing in the beautiful state of Alaska.

She is survived by her son, Mark B. Cassell, of Novato, California, and her daughter, Leesa L. Dwyer of Lake Toxaway. Grandchildren Jason Vincent Dwyer and Blake Joseph Dwyer are presently serving our country in the U.S. Air Force. Also surviving are her brother Dan H. (Judy) Thomas, sisters: Martha (Glennis) McCall, Carolyn (Clinton) Owen, Linda (David) Hoxit, all of Lake Toxaway, NC; a niece, several nephews, as well as some “greats”.

In 2005, Dorothy suffered a stroke and was blessed to have wonderful caregivers. She was lovingly cared for by her sister, Linda, her daughter, Leesa, local caregivers April Hutchinson, Heather Batson, Joretta Owen, Tammy Smith, and many others. After moving to Tore’s Home in 2011, she continued to have many wonderful caregivers.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 649 Kim Miller Rd., Lake Toxaway, NC.

Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund c/o Laverne Moore, 230 Old Quebec Rd., Lake Toxaway, NC 29847, or North Toxaway Baptist Church Food Bank, P.O. Box 149, Lake Toxaway, NC 28747.
