Obituary for Dorothy Jean McKelvin (Owen)

Dorothy Jean McKelvin (Owen), 76, of Etowah went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, May 17th, 2020, after a 13-year hard fought battle with ovarian cancer.

Dot was born on September 25, 1943 to the late Ralph and Myrtle (Barton) Owen of Brevard, NC. She graduated from Brevard High School in 1960. In 1961, she married her high school sweetheart since 9th grade, Larry McKelvin.

She spent her career exemplifying the Bible verse, “Feed my sheep,” as she had a profound impact on many people throughout her Christ-centered years of service to others. First as secretary for Etowah Baptist Church for fourteen years, then seventeen years as assistant for Chaplain Services at Pardee Hospital, and after retirement as financial secretary for Etowah Baptist Church for thirteen years.

She is survived by her husband, the love of her life, Larry McKelvin; two daughters, Sherri McKelvin of Lexington, SC and Kim Griffis of Etowah, NC; her grandchildren, Alyson Beaulieu and husband Jason of Lexington, SC; Brent Shipman of Lexington, SC and Kaidence of Etowah, NC; three great granddaughters, Kyrra, Gracie, and Mya of Lexington, SC; her brothers; Larry Owen and wife Pattie of Hendersonville, NC and Danny Owen of Hendersonville, NC; and her beloved Aunt Marie Cison of Brevard, NC.

Due to COVID 19 restrictions, a private family service will be held. A drive-by visitation will take place on Thursday, May 21, from 2 – 4 PM at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Etowah Baptist Church to celebrate her life.
