Obituary for Dorothy Lorraine Thomas (Nicholson)

Dorothy Lorraine Nicholson Thomas, 63, of Lake Toxaway, NC became present with the Lord on Thursday, October 1st, 2020. She was at Asheville Mission Hospital ED, surrounded by many of her loving family, when the Father ushered her into glory. She was daughter to the late J.C. and Frances Nicholson, who taught Dottie to love the Lord, to love her family, and to love others. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Karen Wilde (late Dennis) and Cindy Nicholson. Survivors include husband, Cecil Thomas; son, Jonathan Thomas (Codi Jo and expectant grandchild); daughter, Julie Thomas Parks (Steven); grandchildren, Hannah Lily and Elizabeth Anne Parks; sisters, Brenda Fisher (late Bennie) and Suzie Loftis (Sandy); nieces, Kellie Crabtree (Steve), Tracie Owen (Jeff), and Brandy Moore (Rodney); nephews, Chris Wilde (Julie) and Patrick Wilde (Liz); and many beloved great nieces and nephews. Survivors also include Dottie’s dear friends, Darla Hall and Pam Stickley.
Dottie was raised in the beautiful mountains of Transylvania Co, NC, where just after high school, she wed her love, Cecil. For most of their adult lives, they made the Mount Rogers region of southwest VA home. Dottie was a Christian and longstanding member of both Oak Grove Baptist Church (Lake Toxaway, NC) and Sugar Grove Baptist Church (Sugar Grove, VA). She proudly served in vacation bible school and many other children’s and youth ministries. She also served her community as an EMT of the Sugar Grove Lifesaving Crew, and as an active member of the Sugar Grove School PTO. She was a talented floral designer, the works of her hands adorning so many homes at Christmastime with her wreaths and beautiful bows. She was a wonderful baker and cake decorator, her tasteful creations admired and enjoyed by so many. She was proud to once co-own a private business in the Marion, VA community, Dottie’s Variety Shop.
She bore the gifts of servitude and hospitality, placing the needs of others afore herself. She was an encourager, many times citing her favorite scripture: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13). She was a calm and gentle soul, always wearing a warm smile, and extending love and kindness to all. To know her was to love her.
She will be profoundly missed, but always remembered. We are comforted in knowing we shall see her again. The family will receive friends in visitation at Oak Grove Baptist Church (649 Kim Miller Rd. Lake Toxaway, NC 28747) at 1pm on Saturday, October 10th. A celebration of life service will follow at 2pm, officiated by former Pastor, Rev. Kenneth Price, and current Pastor, Cliff McKnight. Graveside services will be held privately thereafter for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donation to either Oak Grove Baptist Church or Samaritans Purse instead.
