Pisgah Forest - Evelyn Edith Whitmire, born February 5, 1939 earned her angel wings January 2, 2021, at Mission Hospital Asheville.
She was born in Transylvania County the daughter of the late Esby and Beulah Buckner. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Kelly Ray Whitmire; six brothers Esby Jr., Elmer, William, Asberrie, Elzie and Wallace; and three sisters Gladys McCall, Frances Buckner and Eloise Galloway.
Loving wife and amazing mother, she was the glue that held our family together. She had a heart of gold always putting others before herself. If there was ever something you needed she was always there to give.
A very compassionate woman, she was "momma" to many and like a neighborhood mom would always welcome her children's friends for dinner. But her caring didn't stop there. When a friend and coworkers wife was diagnosed with cancer she quickly offered to move in their three children Joel, Nancy, and Leslie to become part of her family.
Along with her kindness she could also be feisty. Her grandchildren often referred to their nanny as a "firecracker", however, to her husband she was "fireworks".
In addition to being "mom" she also had a long career at Dupont where she ran the number 10 chopper and later on worked in the lab. Even after her retirement she remained close to many of her co-workers.
Evelyn will be terribly missed by her family, friends and those she touched in life. The hole she left in our hearts can never be filled and although we know that we will one day meet again, for now, we are rejoicing that she is walking in heaven with her son Kelly.
She is survived by her husband of sixty three years, Ralph Whitmire, son Mark Whitmire ( Jennifer ) of Brevard and his daughter Jessica Eubanks ( Patrick ) children Elijah and Cora; son Ray Whitmire ( Sandra Boozer ) of Brevard and his daughters Marie and Emily; son Dale Whitmire ( Yait ) of Hendersonville children Wahyu, Allan and Allison; daughter Olivia Whitmire of Brevard son Officer Michael Whitmire ( Kaylyn ) child Lincoln Whitmire of South Port, NC; and her sons Lance Corporal Marine Donovan Carr and Keegan Carr; daughter Ann Whitmire of Brevard children Megan Capps daughters Harper and Amelia Merrill; Madison Benton ( Sam ) daughters Zinnia and Lily; special niece Karen and her sisters Faye Taylor and Mildred Owen along with her other numerous nieces and nephews.
