Obituary for Frances Kirk Smith (Jones)

Frances Kirk Jones Smith of Lake Toxaway departed this life July 5, 2021, at the age of 86, with family and friends at her bedside.
Born in Troy, Alabama, the younger child of Colonel Charles Pollard and Frances Armstrong Jones, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Jones Conover, and her nephew, Charles Nelson Conover.
As the daughter of an Army officer in Hawaii, she experienced the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. When her father asked her to work with him in his accounting firm in Auburn, she left law school and got her CPA. After moving to New Orleans, she worked as a professor at Loyola University, an interior designer, and as a realtor. Her marriage to Thomas Baker Smith, Jr. of Houma, Louisiana, ended in divorce. She had no children.
She was an avid traveler, exploring the cities of Europe and Central America. She also loved to golf, and proudly displayed her hole-in-one plaque from the Lake Toxaway Country Club. When she first visited the area, she fell in love with “her mountains.” She moved to Lake Toxaway as soon as she could, and immediately became part of the community, making friends and developing an extended network of what she considered family. She enjoyed rounds of golf, outings to the Flat Rock Playhouse and concerts at the Brevard Music Center, and hosting get-togethers at her home.
She is survived by her nephew, Kirk Conover and wife, Rebecca, of Greenville, SC and their daughters, Elizabeth May Conover of Springfield, MA and Anna Kirk Conover of Lawton, OK.
A small private service of prayer and remembrance was held at her home, to be followed by an interment at Pine Hill Cemetery in Auburn, beside her mother and father.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Lake Toxaway Fire Department.
