Brevard – George Hovie Chappell, age 84, moved to his heavenly home on Wednesday, February 23, 2022. He will be greatly missed by his adoring family.
George was a native of Transylvania County, born in the Whitewater community to a large family of seven children. He was the son of the late Hovie Clinton and Ellie Mae Alexander Chappell. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Effie Reeves, Helen Perry, Barbara Ramsey and Myirle Chappell and his brother, James Chappell.
After years spent working on local gladiola farms, George, in his 20’s left the mountains for work in Lenoir, NC in the furniture industry. He settled in with Jerry and spent over twenty years working and enjoying life in the area. He was a deacon at Rock Creek Baptist Church in Lenoir, an avid league bowler and loved to fish. In the early 1980’s, George returned to Pisgah Forest to live with his mom and sister Myirle. He was well known in his family for his breakfast gravy. His quiet and gentle manner was an example to all who knew him.
Survivors include his brother and caregiver, Jerry Chappell and wife Debra Kelly Greene of Brevard as well as many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 2pm, Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory.
