Obituary for Lee Powell

Rosman – Lee Powell, born and raised in Transylvania County, was an educator, friend, and most of all a devoted family man. He was a graduate of Rosman High School, Brevard College, and Western Carolina University, where he earned his degree in History and a teaching certificate. He also earned a master’s degree from North Carolina A&T. For 30 years he dedicated himself to teaching the young people of the community. From US History, coaching football, driver’s education, and finally as Athletic Director at Rosman High School, he put his heart and sole into doing what he loved. Outside of the school, he was a tax preparer, tree farmer, Clemson football fan, avid fisherman, dad, and loving husband.

Lee never truly retired once he left the school system. He spent his time helping his wife, Kathy, with her postal route 6 days a week up until very recently. Every April he would say this is the last year he was opening the tax office. When the new year rolled around, he would always get ready for “tax season” as he called it. It gave him another chance to talk with family and friends. He restarted the tree nursery with his sons within the last couple of years, clearing the land and tending to those trees every day. What he truly enjoyed was being a fulltime grandfather. Every opportunity or spare minute was spent with his grandkids.

Lee is survived by Kathy Powell, his wife of 54 years; his sons, Aaron and wife, Michelle, Ryan and wife, April; daughter in-law, Sally; grandchildren, Logan, Anna, Noah, Tyler, Tanner, Makayla, and Michael; and great-grandchildren, Rowyn, Jonah, Rylan, and Miles . He is preceded in death by his parents, Coolidge and Reba Powell of Rosman; and his oldest son, Toby of Salem, SC.

The family will be having a private service and asks in lieu of flowers that a donation be made to your favorite charity or cancer society.
