Obituary for Grant Simpson Purcell

On Monday June 7, 2021, Grant Simpson Purcell, of Brevard, NC, passed away peacefully at his home.

Grant was born on December 26, 1937 to Henry (Hank) and Jane (Painter) Purcell. He grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and graduated from the Cincinnati Country Day School where he was an all-state athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. He attended Williams College where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity.

After starting his career in the oil business and moving many times in his 20s, he settled back in Cincinnati in the late 1960s where he joined the family clothing business, Carriage Trade. This business expanded in Cincinnati as well to Columbus, Ohio, Naples, FL, and Hilton Head Island, SC. In 1989, Grant started the Charleston Center for Relapse Prevention in Charleston, SC, with his wife Nancy, and he has spent the last decades of his life actively supporting people to get and remain clean and sober. Grant collected a wide circle of friends from throughout his life, and he was always known to be a great teller of stories and jokes. He was also an avid reader of mystery novels and an outstanding athlete throughout his life, particularly enjoying football, basketball and golf, which he watched with passion until the end of his life.

Grant was preceded in death by his father, Hank, and his mother, Jane. He is survived by his loving wife Nancy, his children David William Purcell (Steve McDaniel) of Atlanta, GA, Greg Purcell of San Diego, CA, and Leslie Gregg (Dan) of Charlottesville, VA; his grandchildren, Ali, Hank, and Carter Gregg; his step-children, Jack Crimmins (Sue), and Mark Crimmins; his step grand-daughter Heather Allen (Sean), and their three children.

A memorial service will be held on Monday June 14, 2021 at 11am at the Moody-Connolly Funeral Home and Crematory, 181 South Caldwell Street, Brevard, NC 28712.
