Obituary for Helfried Paa
Helfried Paa, 68, of Pisgah Forest, passed away peacefully at his home, on March 8, 2019, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Bunny Paa of Pisgah Forest; mother-in-law Betty Boers of Pisgah Forest; daughter Sandra Paa and her partner Joshua Moyer of Durham NC; daughter Ashley Paa Lance, her husband Nathan, and their daughters Juliana and Sadie of Rock Hill SC; sister Jutta Becker and her husband Gerhard Becker of Marburg, Germany.
Helfried was a loving man, who genuinely cared about each and every relationship he formed. He was a man who valued respect, above all else—being kind to others, honoring promises, and making daily commitments to “Give 110%”.
Born in Germany, Helfried moved to America at age 19. He began work in a toxicology lab outside of Chicago, where he met Bunny. A year later, they were married. In 1982, Helfried and Bunny took a trip around the world, visiting Hawaii, Australia, Singapore, Bahrain, and many countries in Europe and Great Britain. After returning to the states, they travelled the eastern seaboard. When they arrived in Brevard, they knew this was the place where they wanted to settle down and start a family.
Helfried began his landscaping business, Paa’s Inc., in 1985. Shortly thereafter, daughters Sandra and Ashley were born. The family resided in Brevard for about ten years. During this time, Helfried and Bunny found a nice lot in Pisgah Forest and built a home there. The girls were raised in this comforting forest locale and were taught those same values that Helfried and Bunny both found near and dear.
Cancer forced Helfried to retire at age 67. During his years with operations, radiation and chemotherapy, he enjoyed spending time in the comfort of his home. Often times he would walk to the pond to feed his koi fish, or sometimes he would be feeding the titmouse and chickadees from his hand, which was always fun to watch.
Helfried’s wish in later life was to be able to spend more time on his own property, improving it with natural pathways throughout.
Helfried should be remembered for always having a smile on his face, was very kind and thoughtful to others and always put his family first. He was a loving, wonderful and caring man. He touched many people in his life and loved to teach others about nature and horticulture.
A Celebration of his life, welcoming all family and friends, will be held at the Moody-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel in Brevard on Saturday, March 23, at 2PM. The family will receive friends at the conclusion of the service.
