Obituary for James Elvin Rowe Jr.

James E. Rowe, age 86, of Brevard died Sunday, February 3rd, 2019. He was born on March 1, 1932 in Joplin, MO, the son of the late James and Ardath Rowe. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Carol Vaughn Rowe, two sisters, Helen Alexander and Dorothy Overton both of Bartlesville, OK, and one brother, William Rowe of Alma, KS.

Jim graduated from high school in Bartlesville, OK. He received his bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma after serving four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

He joined Scott Paper Company after college where he embarked on a 26 year career in Sales Management and Marketing, rising to the position of Director of Sales Planning and Control in the company’s corporate headquarters in Philadelphia. After taking early retirement, he continued as a consultant to the company for another two years before he and his wife moved to Transylvania County.

His retirement was short lived, however, when he was asked to lead a handful of local downtown business and property owners through a process that lasted more than a year. The effort culminated with the creation of the Heart of Brevard downtown revitalization program. He then served the organization as its’ first executive director for another two years, before retiring again. Jim continued to do volunteer work for several more years. He was appointed to the City of Brevard’s Downtown Master Plan committee in 2002 and served a three year term.

Jim was active in other organizations as well, serving as a board member and officer of the Transylvania County Arts Council and the Brevard Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of Glen Cannon Country Club for a number of years where he belonged to a group called the “Bandits”, known because they held everybody up.

He is survived by two sons, Randy and wife Jessica of Pisgah Forest, and Steven and wife Jun of Zionsville, IN; four grandchildren; and his good friend, Patricia LaPedus.

There will be a private family burial service. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, February 9, 2019 in the Moody-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Heart of Brevard, Inc., the Transylvania County Arts Council, or MOW of Brevard.
