Obituary for Jane Elizabeth Hill (Shepherd)

Jane Elizabeth Shepherd Hill

November 11, 1932-December 6, 2021

Jane Hill, age 89, left this earth December 6th at her home of 59 years, surrounded by her loving family. She was married to her husband of 54 years, William “Harry” Hill, Jr., until his death in 2008.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama to Robert and Mary Shepherd, she was raised in nearby Snowdoun on the family dairy farm which later became a restaurant. After graduating from Lanier High School, she achieved an Associate Degree in education at Troy State. While there met Harry who was returning from service in the Army in Korea. They married in 1953, spent a few years in Auburn, Alabama before moving to Brevard for a year. After an assignment in Covington, Indiana, they moved back to Brevard in 1963 for good.

Jane especially enjoyed her time with her family that visited often. In addition to being an educator, she was an accomplished seamstress, cook, quilter, gardener, traveler and anxiously awaited the opening of each season at the Brevard Music Center and the Brevard College Porter Center.
Jane was an active member of Brevard First United Methodist Church for nearly 60 years, serving in a wide range of roles, especially those related to education the youth there and of our surrounding community. Of significant note was her role in the formation of First Adventure Center, now New Adventure, which was housed in the FUMC church facilities during the school week. As Director of this diverse preschool outreach program, children received class instruction, fitness activities and healthy meals each day, preparing each to enter the first grade. Hundreds of children benefitted from her nurturing and organizational skills.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband Harry, granddaughter Ellie, brother Robert Shepherd, and sister Terry Cain. She is survived by her three children, Harry Hill (Donna), Lynda Camenzind (Bob) and Marie Dean; eight grandchildren Casey Jordan (Donny), Megan Ingle (Josh), Roc Camenzind, (Katie), Hannah Camenzind (Jess Bradley), Pete Camenzind (Caty Del Casino), Caroline Teehan (Sean), Catherine Dean; and ten great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Mary Bruner and Nancy Bonnett.

The family would like to thank Jane’s many in-home caregivers over the years as well as CarePartners Home Care & Hospice of Transylvania County for their warm and loving support of Jane and her family. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be given in her name to the Children’s Ministry at Brevard First United Methodist Church. (325 N. Broad Street, Brevard, NC 28712)
