Obituary for Joseph Earl Kitchen

Brevard - Joseph (Joe) Earl Kitchen peacefully went to be with the Lord on Monday December 26,2022 at his home.
Joe was born September 27,1929 to the late Stella Owen Kitchen and Reginald J. Kitchen of Balsam Grove, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Thelma, his 6 brothers, his granddaughter Marlee Kitchen, his grandson Jordan Kitchen and his daughters in law Sheila Powell, Jessie Thomas and Brook Kitchen.
Joe has been a resident of Brevard for over 93 years, raising his family here with his beloved wife of 63 years, Thelma Louise Kitchen. After her passing, he was comforted by his companion and care giver for the last 6 years, Betty Stamey.
Joe’s life centered around his family of 5 sons and their spouses, his 11 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
Joe loved to work and had an excellent work ethic. He worked on building the railroad in Frost Proof, Florida during his teen years. He was in the Army 1950 to 1951 serving in Germany and Ft. Bragg, NC as a tank mechanic. Joe then worked as a mechanic for auto dealerships for a few years before opening his own automobile repair shop. He then worked for Olin Matheson Chemical in Brevard, NC retiring in 1991 as a millwright. Joe then continued with his passion for auto repair and opened a starter and alternator repair shop which he actively ran until a few weeks before his death.
Joe had a fun sense of humor and loved to joke. He enjoyed collecting silver coins. In his earlier years he liked hunting in the Pisgah National Forest.
In more recent years Joe particularly enjoyed regular visits from Pastor Sam Haven and his mother Julie with honest talks, bible reading, song and prayer.
He is survived by his only sister, Donna Vee McCoy of Kalamazoo, Michigan, his companion Betty Stamey, and his sons Gary Kitchen, Rodney Kitchen and his wife Bonnie, Rickey Kitchen and his wife Kathy, Terry Kitchen, Kevin Kitchen and Shannon Niven all of Brevard, NC area.
Funeral services will be held 2pm, Friday, December 30, 2022 at Moody Connolly Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
