Obituary for Joseph James Mehalic Jr.

Joseph James Mehalic, Jr., age 82, of Brevard passed away peacefully in the arms of his beloved wife on Sunday, May 5, 2019.

He was born on December 10, 1936 to the late Joseph and Sally Mehalic in New Castle, PA. He graduated from New Castle High School and The Capitol Radio and Engineering Institute in Washington, DC. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

Joe and his wife Carmella traveled extensively throughout the United States, South America and Europe with his employment as a Field Engineer contracted to the U. S. Government. He was the Technical Support Manager for the NASA Tracking Station in Quito, Ecuador and South America. He was also the Manager of the Department of Defense Tracking Station in Rosman and Mission Support Manger for the Tracking Station in Bad Aibling, Germany.

He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Yankees and was a coach for Brevard Youth Football for many years. He was very proud to say that the 1982 Brevard High School State Championship Football Team were “his boys”. He also enjoyed coaching “The Wild Bunch”, a women’s softball team in Brevard.

Joe was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church and a member of Glen Cannon Country Club, Elks Club and American Legion.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Carmella Mehalic, one daughter, Terri Little and husband Mike of Powell, OH, two sons, Joey Mehalic and wife Gina of Brevard and Michael Mehalic of Raleigh, one sister, Patricia Simpson of Dunedin, FL, grandchildren, Madison, Alissa and Nick. We will always love and cherish the memory of our “Papa Jose”.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to do many friends for their prayers and support, Father Shawn O’Neal, Debbie Felker and the parishioners of Sacred Heart, Dr. Usedom and his wonderful staff, the Hospice Team and special caregiver, Sonja Fisher.

A Memorial Mass will be held 11am, Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with military honors presented by the Transylvania Honor Guard.
