Obituary for Joyce Garnell Whitmire (Monteith)
Pisgah Forest - Joyce M Whitmire, age 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 15, 2020.
She was born March 17, 1928 to the late Fred and Mamie Monteith in Bushnell, NC and had been a resident of Transylvania county since 1939.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Vivian, Bernice, Doris, Arnold, AJ and Charles; husband, Joseph E Whitmire Jr. and one son, Henry Edward.
She was a charter member of Grace Baptist church where she served and attended faithfully.
In 1944 she was the hired as the first bookkeeper at Transylvania Hospital. After she managed to get five boys started in school she began working for the United States Postal Service and retired after 35 years of service.
Survivors include her sons Fred, Gary (Sandy), Michael (Julie) of Brevard and Jeff (Anita) of Huntsville Alabama; eight grandchildren, Lesley Ledford, Lindsay Wilson, Sarah Whitmire, Savannah Whitmire, Kristen Frisbee, Matthew Whitmire, Carina Whitmire and Ava Whitmire; four great grandchildren Brooke, Parker, Whit and Darby; one sister June Whitmire and husband Marshall of Brevard.
Due to the current pandemic, A private graveside service will be held on Monday May 18, 2020 with a celebration of life service to follow on a later date at Grace Baptist Church.
Joyce loved flowers and they would be appreciated, or in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Little River Volunteer Fire Department, or Grace Baptist Church.
