June was born May 16, 1942, in Transylvania County, NC to the late Fred and Mamie Monteith. She graduated from Brevard High School in 1960 and obtained her cosmetology license. She worked as a hairdresser until starting her family. Even then, her kitchen was often a hair salon.
June was a dedicated homemaker and a wonderful cook. Her Christian faith was a very important part of her life. She led children, youth, and adult choirs. She also shared her talent as a soloist and a choir member.
Family was very important to June, and she looked forward to any opportunity to get together. She and her husband often enjoyed camping, especially at Smokemont, in the Great Smoky Mountains near Cherokee.
In addition to her parents, June was preceded in death by her siblings Vivian Gillespie, Bernice Monteith, Arnold Monteith, Doris Monteith, Joyce Whitmire, A.J. Monteith and Charles Monteith.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Marshall Whitmire, and her children, Sheila Whitmire, Jennifer Evans and her husband Kevin, and Christopher Whitmire. She is also survived by her much loved grandchildren, Courtney Whitmire, Heath Evans and his wife Catherine, and Josie Evans. Her extended family includes many nieces and nephews and her sisters-in-law.
