Larry Eugene Lance, 75 years old, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2020. Larry was a native of Transylvania Country and grew up in Brevard. He was the son of Ernest “Red” Lance and Gladys Smith, who both preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by Hannelore W. Lance, his wife of 50 years.
His second wife, Barbara Lance of Columbia, S.C. survives him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Steve Lance and Susan Michelle Lance (Cabe) of Penrose, NC, as well as by his daughter and son-in-law, Natascha Virginia Lance and Bernd Arztenhofer of Bavaria, Germany. He leaves behind his granddaughters, Emma Natascha Lance and Madison Bailey Cabe of Penrose, NC. He is also survived by his brother, Wayne Lance of Etowah, NC. Larry leaves behind a large and loving family in both Transylvania and Henderson County.
Larry was a dedicated soldier who served 22 years in the Army and continued to serve his country by working for the Department of Defense under Civil Service. He worked hard to achieve success in life and never allowed anyone to hold him back. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart. He strongly believed in his country and was committed to preserving the rights, liberty, and freedom for which it stood. Larry was a true patriot and veteran of the USA.
Larry was also deeply committed to family and believed it to be the core of his life. He was a loving father who supported, guided, and always took care of his family. He instilled the values of integrity and loyalty in his children. He was truly the moral compass that always served as a guide for them. He also knew no “stranger”. Larry loved to engage in intellectual discourse and enjoyed using his talent of wit and humor. He was also known as a bit of a prankster and felt that life should be filled with laughter to balance out the hard times. Larry was a phenomenal storyteller and could weave tales to engage all ages. He loved being in nature and observing the wildlife.
A funeral will be held at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at 12pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family is honoring Larry’s continued love of nature and is asking that donations be sent to Natascha Lance at P.O. Box 516, Penrose NC 28766. Dogwood trees and Mountain Laurel will be planted in his memory to continue to bring the birds and wildlife to them.

Dad and I were very sorry to hear of Larry's passing. I always enjoyed the time I would run into him at the grocery store. He was always so upbeat and usually had a funny story to tell me. I will miss those moments and his big smile. Tasha and Jeff, we are keeping you and all the family in our thoughts and prayers. Love and hugs from Dewey and Diana Nix.
