Obituary for Larry Brent McKelvin

Larry Brent McKelvin, 79, of Etowah, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, May 12, 2021.

Larry was born on October 21, 1941 to the late Orvin Lester and Ruby (Head) McKelvin of Brevard, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James (Jimmy) McKelvin.

He graduated from Brevard High School in 1960. In 1961, he married his high school sweetheart from 9th grade, Dorothy Owen. He began his career at Ecusta Paper Mill. He later transitioned into self-employed construction throughout the Henderson and Transylvania County area. He retired from sales at Brevard Lumber Company in 2005. He was a member of the Etowah-Horse Shoe Fire and Rescue Board of Directors.

Larry loved the outdoors. His favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing with family and friends. He always had a hunting story to tell. He had the best sense of humor, the biggest heart and was a strong role model to many.

Larry was preceded in death by the love of his life, Dorothy (Owen) McKelvin. He is survived by two daughters, Sherri McKelvin of Lexington, SC and Kim Griffis of Etowah, NC; his grandchildren, Alyson Beaulieu and husband Jason of Lexington, SC; Brent Shipman and fiancé Kaleigh Stovall of Charlotte, NC; and Kaidence of Etowah, NC; and three great granddaughters, Kyrra, Gracie, and Mya of Lexington, SC.

A celebration of life service will be held at Etowah Baptist Church on Sunday, June 13, 2021 at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, Bible donations can be made through The Gideons International.
