Obituary for Martha Ann Curto

Martha Ann Curto (October 11, 1944 – February 28, 2024)

Martha Ann Curto, 79, of Brevard, NC, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Born in Transylvania County, NC, on October 11, 1944, Martha was the daughter of the late Joseph Guiseppe Curto and Leila Lola Sexton and the wife of the late Ronald Whitmire. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Henry Curto and Edward Curto; her sisters, Josephine Curto, Jane Haskett, Kathleen Davis, Carmen Brown & Patty Lovell.

Martha was a proud Brevard High School alum that furthered her secondary education by receiving her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina and a master’s degree in elementary education from Clemson University that provided her the educational foundation to teach elementary school for over 45 years in both Greenville and Pickens Counties in South Carolina and Transylvania County in North Carolina, where she delighted in teaching so many amazing students.  One of her proudest moments was being named a Memorable Educator by multiple previous students. Her loving and caring demeaner was evident in her classrooms, as well as her everyday life, and that bright light will be missed by all!

Martha leaves behind her two loving sons, Rick T. Caldwell II (Cristie) of Aiken, S.C., and Joseph Bradley Caldwell (Katy Weisensee) of Pickens, S.C. She was also the proud grandmother of her three granddaughters, Ansley Caldwell, Ellie Caldwell and Lily Caldwell.

Visitation with the family will be held at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home in Brevard, NC from 1:00–2:00 pm on Sunday, March 3, 2024. Funeral services will be held afterwards at 2:00 pm, also at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Whitmire Cemetery, Lake Toxaway.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to Rosman Fire and Rescue and Brevard Fire Department.
