Obituary for Mary Ellen Davis (Davis)

Mary Ellen (Mazie) Davis, age 95, passed away February 1, 2021, at The Oaks in Brevard, North Carolina.
Mary Ellen was born in Spartanburg, SC, on January 13, 1926. She was the fourth of five children born to Marion Buford Davis and Sarah Moore Davis. Siblings Louise Jarrett, Nellie Davis, and Frank Davis preceded her in death, as did her 92-year-old sister Alice, who passed away three days prior.
Older sister Nellie gave Mary Ellen the pet name "Mazie." Mary Ellen and her siblings faced tragedy at an early age with their father's sudden death. From those difficult days, she became a caring helper to her mother and lived with her until her death. This empathetic trait continued throughout her life as she cared for friends and family.
After graduating from Spartanburg High School, Mary Ellen worked for many years at The Delagrave, a textile printing company. Following the company's closing, she worked at the Dorman High School cafeteria.
Mary Ellen was an immaculate housekeeper and enthusiastic cook. She was known for her southern-style potato salad, often brought to family gatherings.
She adored her youngest sister Alice. The two remained close throughout their long lives. Upon retirement, Mary Ellen moved to Brevard to be closer to Alice.
Like her father, Mary Ellen had a talent for playing the piano by ear. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends with songs and hymns, which she continued to do well into her 90s. She was an avid country music fan and enjoyed reading about celebrities, especially Elvis.
She loved her many nieces and nephews, never forgetting to send a birthday card or a news-filled letter written in her small and precise print – often a postcard.
Mary Ellen aged gracefully in Kingsbridge House's care and, later, The Oaks, where she was loved and regarded by the staff and residents. She was attuned to those who were suffering because she had suffered too. She adapted to the changing surroundings in her life and made the best of every circumstance.
Mary Ellen is survived by her brother-in-law Bill McEntire, nine nephews, and three nieces.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church Brevard on Saturday, February 20 at 2pm with pastor Tommy Crocker officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to Connie Maxwell Children's Home, 810 Maxwell Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.
