Obituary for Mattie Owen McCall

Mattie Owen McCall, age 93 of Balsam Grove, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 4, 2018.
She was born on March 7, 1925 in Jackson County, NC to the late Wiley and Florence Owen. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Ward S. McCall, her son, Daniel “Dee” McCall, her daughter, Martha Taylor, two grandsons, Steven McCall and Shawn Austin; her brother, Aaron Owen; two sisters, Leota Galloway and Jessie Mae Phillips; her son-in-law, Freddy Austin.
Mrs. McCall was a member of Woods Memorial Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday School Teacher, Church Clerk, and was a member of the choir.
She had also served on the Board of Balsam Grove Clinic. In 2002, she was named Woman of the Year by the WNC Community Development Program and the NC Cooperative Extension. She was an avid gardener and loved her flowers.
Mrs. McCall’s thoughtful concern for her neighbors, church and community had made all who knew her to strive to follow her example of work and service to her community.
Survivors include three daughters, Frenda Austin of Mills River, Leona McCall of Balsam Grove, and Deloris Owen and husband Ronnie of Brevard; two sons, David W. McCall of Balsam Grove and Farris McCall and wife Sandra of South Carolina; 12 grandchildren, Marty Austin and wife Debbie, Bree Vandal and husband Troy, Tonya Gaddy, Ricky Vaughn, Aundrea Barnes and husband Dana, Monica Lee and husband David, Barry McCall and wife Theresa, Crystal McCall, Tony Vaughn and wife Sharon, Mark Vaughn and wife Nickie, Joe Owen and wife Crystal, Beth Wilson and husband Steve; 29 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; one special great-great granddaughter, her namesake, Mattie Ruth Austin.
The funeral service will be held at 11 AM Friday, December 7, 2018 in the Moody-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Shoal Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Thursday, December 6, 2018 at the funeral home.
