Obituary for Larry Chason

Lake Toxaway - Larry Chason was born on October 26, 1936, in Cairo, Georgia, to Charles Wiley Chason, Jr., and Mary Elizabeth Hawthorne Chason. He was an only child, growing up on a farm near Cairo. In 1955, he graduated from Cairo High School and went on to attend Middle Georgia College for two years. Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country for two years before meeting his future wife, Norma, in Atlanta. They married on June 2, 1962 and had four children.

Larry’s young family moved to Transylvania County in 1966 so that he could work at the Rosman Tracking Station. He and Norma built their beloved home in Lake Toxaway in 1969. Larry worked at the Tracking Station until 1987, when events took his career to Columbia, Maryland. He retired in 1994 and cared for his father and mother during their final years in Cairo. After his mother’s death in 2005, he lived in Lake Toxaway full-time for the rest of his days.

Larry was a strong, patient, and gracious man. Throughout his life, he possessed a curious, razor-sharp mind and enjoyed travel, reading, technology, and current events. Most of all, he loved his family, who will remember his gentle smile and subtle wit. Larry is survived by his wife, Norma; four children, Julie, Ray, Eric, and Kelly; two grandchildren, Mary Catherine and Ellie; son-in-law Jimmy McLaughlin; and daughter-in-law Anna. He died on January 24 at Mission Hospital in Asheville. The family will remember Larry privately and asks well-wishers to honor his memory with a charitable contribution of their choosing.
