Rev. Jackie Hensley, age 72 of Brevard, went peacefully home to meet his dear Savior and Lord on Monday, November 12, 2018. He is now standing in the presence of the King after fighting a difficult battle with ALS.

Jackie was a native of Brevard and graduated from Brevard High School in 1966. He went to work in construction at Dupont, then worked inside the plant of Dupont for about 25 years. In 1987 he was called to preach. He was able to retire early from Dupont to prepare for ministry. He received an Associate Degree from Fruitland Bible College. He also received a Bachelor’s Degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in General Bible Studies in May 1994. Jackie was instrumental in a church plant in Ontonagon, Michigan. He pastored Oak Grove Baptist Church and Dunn’s Creek Baptist Church, and filled numerous interims in the area. He was the founding pastor of a church plant known in Transylvania County as the Church at Sapphire. After retiring from fulltime ministry, Jackie and Mary Lou have been faithful members of Cherryfield Baptist Church.

Jackie was a devout husband and father. He loved traveling with his wife and sharing Jesus with everyone he met. Mary Lou and he made countless visits to shut-ins and sick up until the last week of his life. He enjoyed spending time with his daughters, the apples of his eyes, and their families. He looked forward to opportunities to visit them as often as possible. His love for his family was like no other.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grayson and Edith Phillips Hensley. Survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou Johnson Hensley, of 52 years; his daughters, Scotia Childress and husband Matt of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Kathy Weaver and husband Mike of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Other survivors include six granddaughters: Molly, Hannah, Rebekah, Sarah, Kyndall, Aubrey; a great grandson, Keller; a great granddaughter, Oaklee; a brother, JC Hensley and wife Lois, and two sisters, Linda Hebert and Brenda McCall; an uncle Charles Phillips and aunts Erma Barnett and Betty Brown, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jackie was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing and farming Christmas trees. He took many trips to Lake Santee-Cooper and caught catfish for many a fish fry.

The family would like to thank Care Partners Home Care and Palliative Care for all the tender love and care that Jackie received during his illness especially Linda, Shannon, Heather, and Diane.
