Richard Lawrence Jelley Sr.
Richard (Larry) Jelley peacefully passed away from congestive heart failure in Hospice care at TRH, Brevard, NC on the morning of December 20, surrounded by his loved ones.
Larry was born in TN on October 21, 1935, to the late Michael Edward and Laura Duff Jelley. He grew up in Chattanooga and graduated with a BS from UTC. Larry went to serve in the United State Army for 4 years, and upon leaving the military he settled in Columbus, GA where he worked for SK&F Pharmaceuticals retiring with them after 30 years.
Larry loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping with family and friends. Larry was a Scout Master for Troop 100 in Columbus, GA for years where he influenced and encouraged many boys to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Upon retirement, Larry and Doris moved to Franklin, NC where they spent 25 years of traveling, exploring, and enjoying life.
Larry is survived by his wife of 63 years Doris and 2 children, Mary Kathleen Ellis (Charles) from North GA, and Richard Lawrence Jelley Jr. (Tara) from Brevard. Larry is also survived by a brother Daniel (Robbie) Jelley (TN), and a sister Joan (Todd) Surles (TN), 7 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Larry on January 4, 2023, at Brevard Wesleyan Church, Brevard, NC with a visitation at 1 PM and the service at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Brevard Wesleyan Church where half of the donation will be sent to Franklin, NC Nantahala Hiking Club.
