Obituary

Brevard - Robert "Gary" Gillespie, 74, entered his heavenly home on Sunday, October 11, 2020.

A native of Transylvania County, he was the son of the late Cicero and Gertrude Gillespie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Kenneth and Virgil Gillespie and a sister, Doris Owen.

Gary served his country for four years in the US Navy, two years of which was in the Philippines. After his return home, he began his 34-year career at DuPont, in 1969. During his time there, he spent most summers at Lake DERA, helping maintain the campground and looking out after all of his "kids".

Gary was a member of Carson's Creek Baptist Church, where he served as Youth Director for a number of years. He was an avid deer hunter and loved riding motorcycles and four wheelers.

Gary was deeply loved by his family and many friends and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Bobi and his sons, Joshua and Kevin Gillespie, brother Roger Gillespie and wife, Lucille, all of Brevard and one sister, Joann Johnson of Jacksonville, FL. He is also survived by his father and mother-in-law, Richard and Joan Smith, brother-in-law Rick Smith (Andrea), and sisters-in-law Patricia Cooper (Charlie) and Jo Sprouse (Eddie), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many others who loved him and considered him Papa G.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Sunday, October 18, 2020 at Carson's Creek Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
