Ruby Avanell Winchester Oliver, 90, of Brevard, passed away March 14, 2020, at the home of her son, Kevin Oliver, in Hickory.
Ruby was born May 26, 1929, in the Calvert Community of Rosman, to the late Leo Lester Winchester Sr. and Ida Katie Gillespie Winchester. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Durant Oliver in 2005, a son, Keith Boyd Oliver in 1969, and nine of her 11 siblings.
She is survived by her son, Kevin Durant Oliver of Hickory; grandchildren, Zachary Keith Oliver of Hickory and Ashley Nicole Oliver of Wilmington; sister, Shirley Winchester Wilson of Pisgah Forest; and brother, Boyce Lee Winchester of Tampa, Fla.
Ruby graduated from Brevard High School in 1947 and was married to Boyd the next year in Clayton, Ga. When Boyd was serving in the U.S. Navy, they lived in Providence, R.I., and San Diego, Calif. The rest of her life was spent in her beloved Brevard, where she was a member of St. Timothy United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. She was known as “Cashier Lady” at Brevard Middle School for many years, and also worked at Belk, the Olin Corporation, and Parris Shoe World.
Ruby was always known as “Nana” to her grandchildren. She loved to travel, shop for clothes (Talbot’s of course), and attend her high school “reunion lunches” at Pisgah Fish Camp.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 2 p.m., at Moody Connolly Funeral Home in Brevard, conducted by Dr. Mark Rawls, senior pastor at First United Methodist Church in Hendersonville. Following the service, her ashes will be interred at Pisgah Memorial Gardens in Pisgah Forest.

Ruby was filled with wit and hilarity. My mother worked with Ruby at Brevard Middle School and shared many "Rubyisms" with me. I remember seeing her carefully pruning her lovely ,beloved roses in the front of her home. She was a devout Christian and a friend to all who knew her, and those in need of someone to talk to.

Kevin and family,..We enjoyed knowing Ruby and Boyd for many years! Ruby had a distinctive laugh and shared it with everyone she knew. I’m sure the Lord is enjoying her sense of humor and like him, her love of children. No middle school child that was short of money had to go without when Ruby was on the line. She was one of a kind and we will miss her!

What a kind and loving lady Ruby was. She was so loving to so many of the children at Brevard Middle School. She always joked with them and took time to encourage them. She sure was good to my kids. She will always be remembered by me for her kindness.

I knew Ruby for many years.. we met at a friends house to get our hair done. When Ruby and I would meet when we were out she would start laughing before we said a word. She and I always laughed when we would meet. I considered her my friend. I’ll miss her and I think we will meet again
