Ruby Avanell Winchester Oliver, 90, of Brevard, passed away March 14, 2020, at the home of her son, Kevin Oliver, in Hickory.
Ruby was born May 26, 1929, in the Calvert Community of Rosman, to the late Leo Lester Winchester Sr. and Ida Katie Gillespie Winchester. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Durant Oliver in 2005, a son, Keith Boyd Oliver in 1969, and nine of her 11 siblings.
She is survived by her son, Kevin Durant Oliver of Hickory; grandchildren, Zachary Keith Oliver of Hickory and Ashley Nicole Oliver of Wilmington; sister, Shirley Winchester Wilson of Pisgah Forest; and brother, Boyce Lee Winchester of Tampa, Fla.
Ruby graduated from Brevard High School in 1947 and was married to Boyd the next year in Clayton, Ga. When Boyd was serving in the U.S. Navy, they lived in Providence, R.I., and San Diego, Calif. The rest of her life was spent in her beloved Brevard, where she was a member of St. Timothy United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. She was known as “Cashier Lady” at Brevard Middle School for many years, and also worked at Belk, the Olin Corporation, and Parris Shoe World.
Ruby was always known as “Nana” to her grandchildren. She loved to travel, shop for clothes (Talbot’s of course), and attend her high school “reunion lunches” at Pisgah Fish Camp.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 2 p.m., at Moody Connolly Funeral Home in Brevard, conducted by Dr. Mark Rawls, senior pastor at First United Methodist Church in Hendersonville. Following the service, her ashes will be interred at Pisgah Memorial Gardens in Pisgah Forest.
