Obituary for Shirley Ann Petit (Galloway)

Shirley Galloway Petit went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 18 she was 84 years old. She peacefully passed surrounded by her family after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Shirley was born on September 30, 1935 in a small cabin in Lake Toxaway, North Carolina. She was a graduate of Rosman High School. Shortly thereafter she met Charles Petit whom she married on May 28th, 1954. While traveling the world with her husband, a Lt. Colonel in the Army, she raised her three children that she loved and adored Roger, Eric, and Sherry. She was a lifelong member of Rosman United Methodist Church.

In her spare time Shirley was an avid gardener. Not only did she enjoy tending to her garden that she shared from so generously, but also canned that which she worked so hard to grow. Shirley had many other passions but most of all loved caring for others. She delivered Meals on Wheels until she was no longer able. Prior to that she helped to found the Rosman United Methodist annual Ham Supper. The funds supplied a food pantry that helped to feed families in Rosman. She also made preemie clothes for babies in the NICU at Mission Hospital.

Shirley will be greatly missed by many and her family is at peace knowing she is reunited with her loved ones in heaven.

Shirley is survived by her three children Roger Petit, Eric Petit, and Sherry Hunter. Five grandchildren Whitney Lorenz, Kayla Shaughnessy, Cameron Petit, Holly Hunter, and Candace Reese. Two great grandchildren Ellie and Jaxon Shaughnessy. Four siblings Roy Galloway, Keith Galloway, Sandra Schmitt, and Lynn Galloway.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers that a donation be made to Meals on Wheels; a program that Shirley helped with but also helped her and her husband during their finally years at home.

Funeral services will be held 2pm, Saturday, February 22, 2020 at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory.
