In 1954, Tom graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Political Science and then served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant Artillery. Tom graduated from Indiana University School of Law and immediately passed the bar exams in both Indiana and Florida. On August 8, 1959, he married Ann and moved to Hollywood, Florida where he officially began his career as an attorney in land title insurance. Tom culminated his career by establishing Title America Insurance Corporation, a subsidiary of homebuilder Lennar in Miami, Florida.

Tom was a dedicated Christian and joyfully served in his churches and communities all his life. He was an energetic charter member of Hollywood Hills United Methodist Church, started by his late father-in-law, Dr. Amos L. Boren, in Hollywood, Florida. Once moving to Miami, Florida in 1977, he faithfully served at Old Cutler Presbyterian Church as Clerk of Session and supported his wife, Ann, by ringing handbells in the adult choir she directed. Upon his move in 2000 to Connestee Falls in Brevard, North Carolina, he became an active member of the Adult III Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church of Brevard. Tom taught Bible studies all his life and was still leading a Bible study in his home that began over 20 years ago. Tom was also a former president of the Connestee Fire Rescue Auxiliary and raised funds to enhance their equipment to help save people’s lives in his community.
