Obituary for Wanda Smith Nelson (Smith)

Brevard - Wanda Smith Nelson passed away comfortably Tuesday, October 18 surrounded by family after an extended stay at The Oaks Skilled Nursing Facility in Brevard.

Wanda was born August 26, 1925 in Canton, OH and was the first child of William Paul Smith (Dad) and Hursta Yates Smith (Bobie).

After a short stay in OH the family returned to their native Clay County, NC and also lived in Haywood County for a time before moving to Transylvania in 1939.

She attended Brevard High School, played on the girls’ basketball team and graduated in
1942.

After graduation she went to work at the Ecusta Paper Company where she met and married William (Willie) Nelson in
1947. Both played basketball for the Ecusta industrial basketball teams.

Wanda was preceded in passing by her parents, a younger brother (Charles, little Buddy) and her husband Willie who passed in 1969.

She is survived by three sons, Larry (Linda, recently deceased) of Brevard; Gary (Patti) of Clinton, SC; and Gregg (Anna) of Brevard; brothers Bob (Jeanne) of Tucker, GA; BJ (Sybil) of Marion, NC; seven grand children, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

After the passing of her husband Wanda worked at Brevard College, Glen Cannon Country Club and retired from Transylvania Community Hospital in 1991 after 20 years of service.

Wanda enjoyed sports all her life and was known to join her children and their friends in backyard basketball from time to time. She was an avid bowler, winning several league awards, loved the outdoors and the beach.
More recently she enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren play sports.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and especially enjoyed her friends in the Hannah Sunday School class.

Wanda lived a full, active and faithful life with complete devotion to her family and friends.

A service will be held in the Moody Connolly Chapel on Saturday, October 22 at 11:00am.

The family will be at the family home (43 Montview Circle) Saturday afternoon for friends who wish to stop by..

We wish to thank employees and residents of The Oaks Brevard for their loving care and friendship over the past few years and more recently Four Seasons Hospice for their guidance during Mom’s last days.
