Obituary

Alfred Albert Gagliano Alfred ("Al") Albert Gagliano, 93, passed away Friday, March 30, 2012. Although a sixteen year resident of Brevard, Al was born in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Giovanni and Patrina Borgio Gagliano. He was a veteran of the U.S. National Guard and U.S. Army. Al valiantly served in the European campaign of WWII. His military service included the D-Day invasion on the beaches of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. For his service during the war, he earned many awards including the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and he was award the French Honor of the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. He was a beloved and active member of the community. A devout Catholic, he regularly attended Holy Ghost Parish, Brooklyn, NY; Saint Vincent DePaul Church, Elmont ,Long Island, NY, and then Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Brevard Elks Lodge, the St. Vincent De Paul Society, and the Salvation Army. He also served as a Cub Scout Master for Brooklyn Cub Scout USA. Al is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Phyllis Gagliano; sons, John Gagliano and Sylvester Gagliano of San Antonio, TX, and Ronald Gagliano of Mars Hill, NC; sisters Mary Hadji-Vassili and Helen Bonfiglio; grand children, Marisol Gagliano, Che Gagliano, Jonathan Gagliano, and Katy Gagliano; great grandchildren Mason and Sienna Bingham. An evening rosary and vigil service will be held Sunday 7:00 p.m. at Moody-Connolly Funeral home. A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Carl T. Del Giudice officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard for Veterans of Transylvania County. Reception will follow in Fellowship Hall. Burial will be in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mtn. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Sunday at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home.
