Obituary

Amy Marie Owen

January 6, 1973 ― July 29, 2025

Amy Marie Owen, age 52, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, in her childhood home after struggling with some difficult hospitalizations and health issues over the past few months.

A beloved daughter, sister, and loyal friend, many will remember Amy for her kindness, sweet disposition, and devotion to those that she loved.  Those who knew her best will also recall that she could be stubborn on occasion.  But she had a caring heart and a generous spirit; qualities that defined her throughout her life.  A private person by nature, she kept her circle small, placing her family and close friends above all else.

Born on January 6, 1973, in Brevard, Amy was the daughter of Rev. Wayne Owen and the late Mrs. Pat Owen.  She grew up and spent most of her life in this community, surrounded by the familiarity of home and family.

She was preceded in death by her dear mother, Pat.  She is survived by her father Rev. Wayne Owen (and his wife Jane Owen) of Fletcher, NC; her older brother Rev. Dr. David Owen of Lansing, Michigan; her younger sister Debra Owen Kuykendall (and her husband Rev. Philip Kuykendall) of Zirconia, NC; her step-sisters Shawna, LaShay, and Shannon; a host of cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and a close circle of friends including her special friend Nick Townsend of Brevard.

Amy placed value upon education as evidenced by her own academic endeavors as well as her work as a compassionate paraprofessional at the elementary school level for 14 years.  She was a graduate of Brevard High School (1991), Brevard College (1993), and Southern New Hampshire University (2018).

Amy's roots remained firmly planted in Brevard, where she established a meaningful life, both professionally and personally.  Her professional life was marked by years of dedication and hard work across several fields that touched many lives in her community and beyond.  Among her proud accomplishments, she spent several years working with the Kmart Corporation, where her friendly manner and commitment to service shone.  She also lent her talents and retail and management acumen to O.P. Taylor's Toy Store – a local institution – where she delighted in helping children and families select treasures.  Though Amy had no children of her own, she further displayed her love and support to children and teenagers through her work with the students and staff at Rosman Elementary School, as well as the Schenck Job Corps where she encouraged and guided young people to pursue brighter futures.  For the past few years, Amy had brought her efficiency and problem-solving abilities to a local State Farm Insurance agency, where her colleagues admired her no-nonsense attitude and reliability.

While Amy was dedicated to her professional life, she found great joy in the company of her loved ones, always making time to celebrate holidays, milestones, and accomplishments.  She would be the one cleaning up and taking your plate away before you were done eating.

She also had a love for travel, never passing up an opportunity to explore new places and discover beautiful scenes, either far away or close to home, with a sense of appreciation and wonder.

Amy's life was filled with many challenges over the years.  There is a song written by Molly Reed and Ben Glover and recorded by Colton Dixon that most accurately describes her experiences.  The song says…

There are days I've taken more than I can give

And there are choices that I made

That I wouldn't make again

I've had my share of laughter

Of tears and troubled times

This has been the story of my life

I have won

And I have lost

I got it right sometimes

But sometimes I did not

Life's been a journey

I've seen joy, I've seen regret

Oh, and You have been my God through all of it

Even in the last few months of Amy's life when she was battling so many health issues, the desire of her heart was to tell others about the goodness of God in her life.  May her resilience, her gratitude to God, and her love for others be her legacy!

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all who supported Amy during her illness.  Amy's passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who loved her
