Obituary

Ann Devendorf Burchfield, 77, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at her home in Lake Toxaway, after a prolonged illness. Born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada in 1934, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Violet Sale Devendorf. A brother, John Devendorf, of Niles, Mich., predeceased her. After graduating from Grosse Ile High School in Michigan, she attended Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich., graduating with a B.A. in home economics. She met her husband, David, when he moved to Grosse, Ile in 1943. They were lifelong best friends and sweethearts. She loved to cook, travel, sew and garden. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. They lived in Ann Arbor and Trenton, Mich., Short Hills and New Vernon, N.J., Texas and Manhattan, N.Y. before settling in Lake Toxaway. She was active in several community and arts organiza-tions — the past vice president of the Houston Ballet Guild, president of the Lake Toxaway Garden Club and board member of St. Andrews-By-The-Lake Church in Lake Toxaway. She is survived by a loving and devoted husband of almost 55 years, David Burchfield; three children, Susan Burchfield Grieger, of Sewickley, Pa., John Burchfield, of Chicago, Ill. and James Burchfield, of Lake Toxaway; son-in-law, Daryl Grieger, of Sewickley and two grandchildren, Ashton and Austin Grieger, of Sewickley. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on April 9, 2011, at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Brevard. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Andrews-By-The-Lake Chapel, P.O.
