Obituary

Barbara Templeton Masterson, age 90, of Brevard, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at Tore's Home on June 14, 2023, three days shy of her 91st birthday. She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

A native of Washington, D.C., she was born on June 17, 1932. Miss Templeton attended Theodore Roosevelt High School and the University of Virginia Nursing School in Charlottesville, Virginia. On February 26, 1952, she married UVA student Grover Allen Masterson in the University Chapel.

Mrs. Masterson moved to Alaska with her husband, where he served in the Army during the Korean War. They moved with DuPont to Chattanooga, TN, Wilmington, DE, and Brevard, where they raised their three children together. They were grateful to have moved to this beautiful place they called home for the rest of their lives.

Barbara worked for Drs. Newland and Folger and as a camp nurse at Gwynn Valley for many summers, and volunteered with hospice from its founding, Habitat for Humanity, and at Transylvania County Hospital. Barbara's life was marked by service to the community. Gregarious, warm-hearted by nature, and always ready to laugh, Barbara had many friends and "never met a stranger." She was active in the bridge club and knitting club. A dedicated homemaker, Barbara was skilled in sewing, embroidery, knitting, and crocheting, making many of her and her children's clothes.

Some of her favorite times were traveling with her two sisters and sharing their love of reading, particularly mysteries.

Mrs. Masterson is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Bat, and her father and mother, Norman and Esther (Raffel) Templeton.

Barbara is survived by daughter Gail Masterson of Brevard; sons Norman Masterson and wife Lisanne of Brevard and David Masterson and wife Carla of Charlottesville; granddaughters Jordan Masterson of Asheville, and Kendall Masterson of Charlottesville, grandson Casey Cooper of Brevard; and great-grandson Page Masterson of Asheville; and sisters Penny Kobernusz, and husband Bill of FL, and Nancy Pasqualone, and husband Terry of TX.

Barbara will be missed by all who knew and loved her. For the family, a memorial service will be held at the Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian

Church Garden of Remembrance. The family is grateful for the care she received from her caregivers at Tore's Home.
