Barbara Jo Pangle was born on Friday August 11, 1933 in a two-story house on Main Street in Rosman, NC to Bertrick Irene Rogers Holcombe and Ernest Charles Pangle. She attended Elementary School in Rosman NC, Jonesville VA, Clintwood VA, and Boone NC. The family returned to Rosman with Jo enrolling at Rosman High School. She participated in women's basketball, and was a talented guard for the team. While attending High School, Jo met the love of her life, Ernest Powell, at the movie theater in Rosman. They were married on August 17th, 1949 in Clayton, GA, accompanied by best friends, Willie Aiken and Dovie Galloway Whitmire. Jo continued her studies at Rosman High and graduated in 1951. She was voted by the senior class of 1951 as having the "Best Personality". Ernest enlisted in the US Army and was deployed to France. Jo made the long journey across the Atlantic by ship to be with Ernest while he was stationed in LaRochelle during the Korean War.
Beth, their only child was born in 1961. The family moved into their new house at 2064 Pickens Highway.
Jo believed in working and she did, as long as she was physically able. She was employed in the Brevard area at Fred Long's Drug Store, Cassell's Five & Dime, and Ford's Corner Sandwich Shop. In Pickens, SC she worked at Sangamo Electric. In the Rosman area she worked at M-B Industries, Jarrett's, and Powell's Paint and Body Shop. Jo and Ernest maintained a full garden up until 2012.
Jo was a servant to the community and became a member of the Rosman High School Athletic Tiger Club. She was given the responsibility of running the concessions, where fans from both teams would buy hot dogs for her famous chili.
Jo's biggest contribution to the area was her involvement in the Eastatoe Community Center. Her compassion for people and their needs resulted in numerous fundraising events such as bingos and benefits. Ernest and Jo selflessly devoted their time to the Center from 1961 to 2013. Jo always enjoyed being behind the scenes with friends manning the kitchen during events such as, Ernest's beloved First Tuesday Night Pickers.
After having surgery in May of 2014, she became unable to live independently. She spent her final journey at the Oaks of Brevard. Mamaw Jo, also known as "Jo Jo" brought a smile to all employees and staff that entered her room. She was actively involved in knowing all about each of her caretaker's families, friends, and their social lives.
In her final days, many friends and family surrounded Jo as she prepared to meet her Lord and Savior. She will have a special place in our hearts…forever!
A private family gathering will be held.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Eastatoe Community Center, 76 Clay Pole Road, Rosman, NC 28772.
